CONGRATULATIONS, to Bertie County Schools for receiving the 100% School Participation Award during the 2012 Relay for Life Annual Kick-Off Celebration! Several Bertie County Schools, along with Central Services, were recognized for their contributions for the 2011 Relay season. We are both pleased and proud of all staff that contributed time, energy and creativity but especially funds to support this initiative.
Bertie County has one of the highest incidence rates for cancer in the state of North Carolina. In 2004 alone the Bertie County prostate cancer incidence was 237.4, far exceeding the state rate of 160.2. This year cancer is the leading cause of death for North Carolina citizens under the age of 85. Cancer is expected to surpass heart disease as the leading cause of death in our state and the nation by the year 2015.
Bertie County Schools continues its commitment to raise funds for Relay for Life. Last year Bertie County was ranked as the number one fundraiser for Relay for Life by raising $9.75 per capita and landing many contributors. As we approach a new year, we challenge you to help us surpass that and to continue our 100% school participation!

Whether you are a parent, citizen, student or business owner, you will find the NC School Report Card to be an excellent tool to use in gathering important data about our schools. Further, you will find the NC School Report Card to be an excellent snapshot of academic performance in Bertie County Schools for the previous school year.
We are extremely proud of what we have accomplished as a district, yet we fully realize the current school year is filled with change and challenge. As a district we will continue to explore new ways to engage students in real and relevant learning and assessment, to challenge them to be creative thinkers and to raise student achievement. A primary goal is also to ensure that all of our teachers participate in job-embedded powerful professional learning that will equip them with the skills, knowledge, attitudes and behaviors to educate all children.
I encourage you to ask your child's principal questions about school performance or visit our schools to learn more about the special programs, engaging instruction and change efforts under way.
